Benedicta's Story

Benedicta is originally from Ghana and came to USU from Virginia. She had several life experiences after high school before she enrolled at USU. Homesickness, self-doubt, and finances have been some of the struggles Benedicta has worked hard to overcome.

Alicia's Story

Alicia always planned to be a stay-at-home mom along with a strong commitment to education. As married students, she and her husband overcame challenges such as finances and time management to put both of them through school at USU. She has used her Education degree in a variety of ways to live the life she designed.  She appreciates how her USU experience taught her to be a life-long learner which has helped her own a family business with her husband, serve in her community, and pass along her love of learning to her seven children.

Chris's Story

Chris didn’t originally plan to go to college. He was concerned that he might not be college material.  After encouragement from his wife’s family he enrolled at USU and determined to try his best. His general education courses revealed a great talent and love for mathematics and statistics. After earning a PhD from Harvard, he returned to USU as a professor and is currently the department head for Mathematics and Statistics.

Megan's Story

Megan came to USU on scholarship but ended up losing that scholarship when she didn’t do as well as she had in high school. She went on to graduate with a degree in Accounting. She currently owns Temptation Cupcakes (in Logan, UT), is the mother of two adorable young children, and is the accountant for her husband’s landscaping business. She came to understand why a college education goes beyond job training.

Felipe's Story

Felipe is currently a pre-med student at USU. He is a first-generation college student and American. He struggled to understand how to access the many supports and resources available to all students at USU. After failing his first math class, he decided he needed to quit trying to navigate life without the help of others. He shares great advice about connecting with faculty.

Jonathan's Story

Jonathan graduated from USU with his sites on being a professor of Biological Engineering. While in graduate school, he realized that the career he designed wasn’t allowing him the life he designed. He was able to find a new interest in dentistry and now owns his own dental practice. This has satisfied his interest in STEM while also providing him time to pursue family and personal goals which include contributing to his community.
